Money at the baseline, Happy on the left and Visible on the right.
The more you have, the more visible you become. At some point, your happiness is equable. As expenses rise, they draw you into the system - the more you have, the more you can do, the more is wanted by you and from you. Money and Money meet - socially and fiscally. As income goes up, there's more to worry about, to be careful with, to protect. You need insurance. You're adopting problems from people you're responsible for, professionally and personally. Being in that position creates pressure.
The Ones who thought they'd escaped have relinquished the burden of other people's welfare but become subject to equal pressure from other directions. They're told Opportunities Are There by people who've already manipulated the opportunities to find their victims in people like Them. "New money, suit and tie, I can read you like a magazine." The higher you fly, the more flight is promised, and before you know it you've sold your soul - you don't care any more, either.
Dialogue above records a conversation with Brian,... credit where it's due.
Money and energy are certainly connected and I could never work out what it was that drove the system. Then it dawned that the effect caused by money is an increase in pressure - the more you have, the tighter the aperture to squeeze through, the greater the pressure the further you are squeezed in the system-fed direction - under the illusion of flying, you're feeding into a promise system that never delivers, because it's an illusion, while the reality is that people and planets need sustenance and care, if you've got a job to do at all. The Job as it stands is by now so centred on how much money you make that sight of the waste incurred is completely lost.
However it gets people, it seems to have the same kind of effect. Entrepreneurs promise to do great things for the world and then stick five empty first-class carriages on their trains so the peasants squash up while payers get a carriage to themselves. Or they build a space rocket for hefty payloads to be taken out of the atmosphere for a thrill. If anyone's buying up vast tracts of rainforest to save the earth's lungs from total destruction, I've yet to hear anything about it.
